Mustang GT Exhaust Buying Guide (2015-2023): Headers, Cats & Cat-Back

Everything you need to know to upgrade the exhaust on a 2015-2023 Ford Mustang GT (5.0L Coyote) - 1 3/4" vs double-step headers, metal vs ceramic cats, and full systems.

The 2015–2023 Ford Mustang GT (S550, 5.0L Coyote V8) responds extremely well to exhaust upgrades. The factory system is restrictive and muted; the right headers, cats and cat-back unlock real power and the deep, aggressive V8 note the Coyote is capable of. Here’s how to choose.

The parts that matter

Long-tube headers

Equal-length long-tube headers are the biggest power gain on a Coyote. By matching primary tube lengths they synchronise exhaust pulses for better scavenging — more torque, sharper response and a cleaner, sharper tone than the factory manifolds.

High-flow cats

High-flow catalytic converters keep the car street-friendly while flowing far better than stock. On the Mustang GT you typically choose 100-cell metal cats for naturally aspirated builds, or 200-cell ceramic cats for forced-induction (supercharged or turbo) engines.

Cat-back

The cat-back sets the sound character and drone level. A well-tuned cat-back delivers a deep V8 note without harsh rasp or tiring highway drone.

1¾″ vs double-stepped headers

  • 1¾″ equal-length headers: the all-round choice. Excellent for naturally aspirated and forced-induction street builds, balancing exhaust velocity and flow.
  • Double-stepped 1¾″ → 1⅞″ headers: step up for high-horsepower builds. The stepped primaries maintain velocity low down while opening flow up top for maximum power without losing drivability.

Headers & cats, or a full system?

If you already have a cat-back you like, a headers & cats package bolts to it and gives you the big gains. If you’re starting fresh or want a matched, proven combination, a full header-back system (headers, cats, connector pipes, centre pipes and rear mufflers) takes the guesswork out and guarantees the sound and fitment work together. Ramjet’s full system holds the Australian record for the fastest full-weight, bolt-on-only Mustang over the ¼ mile.

Important: model years

The 2015–2023 S550 Mustang GT and the 2024+ S650 use different exhaust architecture. Make sure any system is specified for your exact year — Ramjet S550 headers fit 2015–2023 and do not fit the S650.

Frequently asked questions

Will this fit my Mustang GT? Ramjet headers, cats and full systems fit the 5.0L Coyote V8 in both 2015–2017 and 2018–2023. They do not fit the S650 (2024+).

Metal or ceramic cats? 100-cell metal for most naturally aspirated builds; 200-cell ceramic for forced-induction engines.

Do I need connector pipes? If you’re running headers & cats into a factory cat-back, optional connector pipes make it bolt straight up. A full system includes everything.

Will it drone on the highway? A well-designed cat-back delivers a deep note without harsh drone — Ramjet systems are tuned specifically to avoid it.

Do I need a tune? Recommended to realise the full gains, but not required for fitment.
